2013 Green Apple Day of Service at Buckingham K-5 Schools

On Saturday, September 28th, volunteers from VMDO Architects and Waterstreet Studio joined Buckingham County Primary School Principal Pennie Allen to take part in the USGBC Center for Green Schools’ Green Apple Day of Service! Together, the Green Apple team weeded the school garden, amended the compost, and prepared the garden beds for fall planting.

Thriving in the garden currently are sunflowers, morning glories, nasturtium, and herbs. The team harvested tomatoes, peppers and zucchini, and witnessed a stick bug, grasshoppers, a lizard, and a cedar waxwing! A cedar post and wire fence surrounding the garden was handsomely built by community volunteers during the previous week.

About a dozen teachers at the Primary and Elementary Schools have each volunteered to adopt a garden bed for project based learning this fall. We are excited to continue experiencing the bounty and beauty of the garden this fall season!
